Johann Strauss – New Dimensions
A 360° projection and interactive sound spaces bring the life and work of the Waltz King to life at the new Johann Strauss Museum in Vienna.
Ostrich Eventagentur GmbH
To mark the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss, the new Johann Strauss Museum opened in Vienna in November 2024. The permanent exhibition “Johann Strauss – New Dimensions” merges sound, image and movement into a multimedia experience across 900 m².
BILDWERK was responsible for the technical realization of the immersive projections, contributing comprehensive expertise in media control, 3D mapping and real-time visualization.
Concept
In collaboration with the creative agency Media Apparat and Ostrich Eventagentur GmbH, an exhibition was created that translates the life and work of the “Waltz King” into a contemporary narrative form.
At its core lies a 360° projection that fully envelops the space, transforming motifs from Strauss’s compositions and biography into a dynamic visual composition. The experience is enhanced by a motion-sensitive headphone system that creates individually responsive sound spaces for each visitor.
The result is an immersive installation that interweaves historical content, music and technology into a coherent spatial perception.
Technology
BILDWERK handled the technical planning, programming and implementation of the projection systems. Key tasks included: 1. Media server & real-time control: Development and implementation of the central media logic. 2. 3D mapping: Precise projection mapping on architectural structures for seamless visual coverage. 3. Audio synchronization: Integration of the projections with the interactive spatial audio system. 4. Large-scale projection: Over 400 m² of high-resolution content for a fully immersive environment.
Through precise technical coordination, the installation achieves both aesthetic and functional excellence – ranking among the largest mapping setups of its kind in Europe.
Experience
A special highlight developed by BILDWERK is the waltz composition machine located in the museum shop. Visitors can intuitively control musical parameters to generate their own piece in the style of Johann Strauss.
The system automatically produces a printed score, allowing each composition to be taken home as a personal souvenir. This combination of algorithmic composition, playful interaction and tangible keepsake offers a contemporary approach to experiencing Strauss’s musical legacy.
