At Ars Electronica Festival 2024, “Raise Your Voice” used AI to turn the voices of children and teenagers into adult ones.

Adult Voices for Young Ideas

As part of Ars Electronica Festival 2024, Jan Schlüter and Silvian David Peter from the Institute of Computational Perception at JKU Linz presented the installation “Raise Your Voice” at the JKU MED Campus in Linz. BILDWERK was responsible for the design and realisation of the installation. The art project explores the “authority gap” between age groups: the fact that children and young people are taken less seriously than adults, despite having important ideas and concerns.

Rather than trying to dismantle societal prejudice the hard way, “Raise Your Voice” takes a pointed detour. Visitors of all ages record statements and dialogues at the installation, then hear them played back in an adult’s voice, converted by an AI-based voice model. This puts everyone on equal footing. If they like, visitors can also broadcast their recording live through radios placed around the campus.
